Where Acrobatics Meet Emotion: My N.Ormes Experience

Last night, I had the profound pleasure of witnessing N.Ormes, a breathtaking 60-minute contemporary circus performance by the extraordinary Quebecois duo, Agathe and Adrien.

This show was extra special for us – I had carefully chosen these tickets as a birthday gift for my spouse, knowing from everything I had read that it would be a real treat. And it absolutely was.

From the moment the spotlight illuminated the stage, the duo captivated us with their seamless blend of acrobatics and dance. Their performance challenged traditional gender roles, as Agathe and Adrien fluidly exchanged positions of base and flyer, prompting reflections on strength, vulnerability, and equality. The minimalistic set, enhanced by Claire Seyller’s evocative lighting and Simon Leoza’s hauntingly beautiful score, created an intimate atmosphere that drew us completely into their world.

Critics have been rightly full of praise for N.Ormes:

Binge Fringe Magazine awarded it five stars, calling it a “complex and nuanced insight into gender and societal expectation” and highlighting the duo’s “truly astounding feats of strength and balance.”

Broadway Baby described it as “something out of a dream,” marveling at the “never-before-seen acrobatic exchanges” that redefine gender norms.

However, despite the show’s brilliance, my experience was somewhat marred by the audience’s reactions. The performance’s silent nature and emotional depth seemed to call for quiet reflection, yet many attendees responded with vocal sounds, sometimes laughter and applause at moments that felt more contemplative than comedic. It felt like all we had to do was stay mesmerized and let the experience wash over us, but unfortunately, some of that magic was lost in the noise.

Still, N.Ormes is a masterpiece – a masterful exploration of human connection, challenging societal norms through the powerful medium of circus arts.

It’s a performance that lingers in your heart and mind, prompting deep reflection long after the final bow.

I feel grateful we got to experience it, and it made a perfect birthday gift!
